Intro to Interdisciplinary Curriculum
![]() |
According to the author and creator, Heidi Hayes Jacobs, the interdisciplinary curriculum incorporates: "a knowledge view and curriculum approach that consciously applies methodology and language from more than one discipline to examine a central theme, topic, issue, problem, or work" (1989).
Interdisciplinary: A knowledge view and curriculum approach that consciously applies methodology and language from more than one discipline to examine a central theme, issue, problem, topic, or experience.
In layman's terms, this curriculum creates connections between areas that are usually not together in a normal classroom. Connecting these different aspects or topics can help students to become more creative and engage them in what "real-life research" looks like.
Example: My two emphasis are science and social studies. We can connect these two topics in a variety of ways. One common example is weather; how different natural disasters affect different communities.
This curriculum is aimed at middle school and high school students after a foundation of disciplinary information is understood.
